Atlanta Mayor Declines Invite To Join Biden's Cabinet

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms declined an invitation from President-elect Joe Biden to join his Cabinet.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms turned down an offer to serve in President-elect Joe Biden's Cabinet, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Saturday. A spokesperson for the mayor and the Biden Transition Press Office both confirmed this statement.

"Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms was honored to have been offered a role in the Cabinet, which she respectfully declined," said Rashad Taylor, senior adviser to the mayor, in a statement.

The statement did not clarify which Cabinet position Bottoms was offered. According to the AJC, Biden's office did not answer a question about which Cabinet position Bottoms was asked to fill.

"The mayor's focus remains on the people of Atlanta and the great state of Georgia. Out of respect for the process, and the other candidates under consideration, no additional comment will be forthcoming on this matter at this time," Taylor said in the statement.

While Biden selected U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate, throughout the presidential campaign there had been speculation that Biden might choose Lance Bottoms or Stacey Abrams of Georgia to help draw women and Black voters to the Democratic presidential ticket.
